The Annual River Recreation Festival, sponsored by the Gallia County Chamber of Commerce, is not only the highlight of the summer season in downtown Gallipolis, but also one of the most significant events of the entire year, attracting residents of Gallia and the entire region. It marks the celebration of Independence Day, and always takes place over the July 4th holiday. This year will commemorate the 45th observance of this unique occasion. Key to the success of the River Recreation Festival over the past 45 years is the variety of activities and exciting entertainment, with appeal for all ages. Special attractions are designed for children, as well as adults. First Avenue, facing the majestic Ohio River in front of the Gallipolis City Park, is lined with food vendors, who offer an appealing variety of festival favorites. The Main Stage features a full schedule of entertainment. Activities include competition for all ages, including the Baby Tot Sparkler Contest, Little Miss and Mr. Firecracker, the Junior Miss competition, and the anxiously awaited selection of the River Recreation Queen. The best in musical entertainment, including vocal, instrumental and gospel music is always a part of the celebration. In addition original art work, created by both amateur and professional artists is on exhibit, with an additional showing of art by the youth of the County. Crafters also have booths positioned throughout the Park. One day is set aside for Kid's Day, with numerous games and contests. Other highlights include a live auction, the Independence Day Parade and the magnificent fireworks display. These all attract a crowd from miles around. In recent years, a great draw has been the amusement rides. The Chamber's River Recreation Festival Committee works the year around to plan this annual event. The upcoming Festival, scheduled July 1-4, 2010, promises to be the biggest and best, marking the 45th year of this Independence Day celebration in the unique Gallipolis City Park.
